On this rich and wonderful earth, the variety of altitudes, rainfall, and sunshine leads to the forming of different geographical features, such as deserts, prairies, and rain forests. Although Taiwan is comparatively small, it has nourished a great variety of creatures. The island arose from the ocean some 3 million to 5 million years ago when the earth was turbulently growing. During the glacial period and the inter-glacial period, the island went through several transitions of being joined to the mainland and then being separated from it. After several episodes of joining and separation again, about 10,000 years ago, when the global climate was turning warmer, Taiwan was once again separated from the mainland by the Taiwan Strait. The high Central Range of mountains has provided an environment to nurture a diverse range of living creatures, which have become unique indigenous creatures of Taiwan.
