The Department of Zoology was formerly the "Division of Zoology", established from the foundation of the museum in 1908. The department has been responsible for research, collection, exhibition and educational programs for the past century. Its primary duties involve conducting studies on the categorization, ecology and behavior of animals and collection and preservation of specimens, literature and documents. As an extension of its primary duties, the department also supports and participates in, educational programs and exhibitions.

Much of the department's research relates to indigenous zoological resources and biodiversity. The department has dedicated its effort mainly to the study of Taiwan's indigenous animals, although some has also focused on other types of animals. The research work covers mammals, birds, reptile, amphibia, insects and shells. In addition to conducting research projects on its own, the department has sought cooperation with research institutions and academic establishments at home
Formosan Clouded Leopard and abroad. It has undertaken projects to digitalize its abundant collection of animal specimens and has published the results of its studies in related academic periodicals at home and abroad. The department has the ultimate goal of promoting academic exchange and expanding the sphere of knowledge.
