The department's collections of specimens consist mainly of Taiwan's indigenous animals with some from other parts of the world. The large variety of collections covers nine major categories including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, shells, insects, plants, photos and models amongst which the collection of insect specimens is the most abundant while specimens of birds and mammals are the most unique. Many specimens are rare indigenous species on the international preservation list, including Taiwan Clouded Leopard, beaver, Mikado Pheasant, Taiwan Blue Pheasant, and Papilionidae. These specimens are of significant academic value in the research of biodiversity or animals in
Taiwan. The department has invested a considerably amount of time and manpower in aggressively improving the environment in which the specimens are preserved in hope that its valuable collection may exist perpetually.
The department has utilized its expertise in organizing exhibitions and educational programs in addition to research and collection. The direction of its future research and collection of specimens will focus on both terrestrial and marine animals to promote the island's marine culture. The department hopes to continue and develop its role and function in society and enables the people of Taiwan to recognize the museum's academic and social-education aspects.
