Taiwan is situated in the tropical and subtropical regions. In spite of the fact that it is small in area, with its various topographic features, the island has different climatic regions - tropical, subtropical, temperate, and polar - which have nourished a great variety of botanic resources, making it look just like a miniature world in its own right.
The museum is a "natural history museum" with the Department of Botany primarily responsible for the survey, collection and preservation of and research into, botanical statistics and specimens as well as the sponsorship of exhibitions and educational programs. The department operates a herbarium and is listed on the "Index Herbarium" under the code of TAIM (Herbarium of the Taiwan Museum). The herbarium currently has a collection of vascular plants, algae and bryophyta.

The department has been engaged in a thorough survey of the diversity of indigenous plants in Taiwan. Currently, much of its effort is dedicated to research into vascular plants (pteridothyta and flowering plants), and bryophyta, algae (seaweed and micro algae), with emphasis on fabaceae leguminosae, asteraceae composirae, pteridothyta, seaweeds and micro algae. In addition, the department also conducts in-depth surveys of herbal, ornamental, edible and poisonous plants.
