Ivory Fossil

Giant Prehistoric Animals of Taiwan

The large animal fossils discovered from the Pleistocene of the Quaternary in Taiwan could be divided into two groups: Tso-chen and Penghu, as found in the Tsailiao River of Tso-chen, Tainan (Hsinhua Hills) and Penghu Channel respectively. And ancient elephant fossils were discovered in both animal groups, such as stegodon and mammoth in Tso-chen and palaeoloxodon in Penghu Channel. These fossils have covered skulls, jaw bones, ivory, molars, spines, hipbones, legs, etc. The most of the fossils are teeth and secondly limb bones. There are some spinal bones, but not many. There are many specimens with both tooth and alveolus intact. Sometimes, the fragments of elephant teeth were discovered in a considerable amount.
