Chelonia mydas (Linnaeus, 1758)
The green sea turtle is distributed over the tropical and subtropical oceans. They are large migratory sea turtles, able to dive into the water within 100-200 meters. They feed on seaweed and large algae to accumulate a great amount of green pigment in body fat, for which they are named. The adult has a body length of around 120-150 cm and weighs more than 100 kg. The young takes 10-20 years to reach sexual maturity. Due to the repeatedly damaged spawning grounds by humans and frequent incidental catch of adult turtles, they are already listed as an endangered species. Presently, the Wangan Isle of Penghu in Taiwan has been designated as a reserve for green sea turtles, in order to achieve conservation goals.
