Ulva fasciata

Ulva fasciata Delile

Ulva fasciata is a species of marine Chlorophyta (green algae), with a grass green or dark green body shaped like flat, long band or lanceolate, comprising two layers of cells in irregular cleavage, entire in edge or wave-like folded. The leaf of its mature body is twisted like a spiral attached on the rock with disc-like appressoria. The body length is normally about 20-50 cm in a width of 1-3 cm, sometimes reaching more than 1 meter if growing in the place with organic contaminants.

Ulva fasciata is distributed globally over the Pacific Ocean in Japan, Ryuku Islands, Taiwan, mainland China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Australia, etc. In Taiwan, it grows across the entire coasts of the island, usually on the rocks of the middle intertidal under small-scale wind waves or tidal pools of shallow waters, particularly in the waters rich with organic contaminants. It can be seen all year round and is the most flourishing between February and April. It is an edible plant or used as a bait for fishing. Medically, it can be used as a resistant against bacteria or insects, antipyretic or wound-care dressing.
